Tattoo Healing Timeline: What to Expect Week by Week

Here’s a clear, honest breakdown of what to expect after you leave the & how to keep your new tattoo looking its best!

Day 1–2: The Fresh Tattoo Phase

Your new tattoo is technically an open wound, so you’ll likely notice redness, tenderness, & a little oozing of plasma- that’s totally normal!

  • Keep it clean: Gently wash with unscented soap & warm water 2–3x a day.

  • Pat dry: Use a clean paper towel. Don’t use anything abrasive!

  • Apply ointment: Use a thin layer of the unscented lotion or ointment. Don’t over moisturize- your body will absorb what it needs, in the area it needs it.

  • Avoid soaking: No swimming, hot tubs, or long baths.

  • Stay out of the sun!

Days 3–7: The Itchy & Flakey Stage

The top layer of skin starts to heal & may form light scabs, which is a sign that your skin is regenerating! Your tattoo color may slightly fade or dull- don’t worry, that’s temporary!

  • Do not pick or scratch! It can cause scarring, or uneven healing in color.

  • Continue to gently cleanse & moisturize daily.

  • Wear loose, clean clothing over the area to protect the tattoo from the sun or other unsterile environments.

Days 7–14: The Peeling & Scabby Stage

Your tattoo may start to peel & scab over. This is a normal part of the healing process and a sign that your skin is repairing itself. Let the scabs fall off naturally & avoid picking, as this can cause scarring & damage to your tattoo.

  • Continue light washing & moisturizing.

  • The itch means it’s healing, not that something’s wrong! Resist scratching.

  • Avoid heavy sweating & sun exposure.

Weeks 3–4: The Settling Stage

Most surface healing is done, but the deeper layers of skin are still repairing. Your tattoo should look smoother & brighter each week.

  • Continue to moisturize if it feels dry or tight, & use a gentle, fragrance-free lotion.

  • Continue to avoid direct sun or tanning.

Month 1 and Beyond: Fully Healed

Your tattoo should be fully healed! Now your focus should be long-term care:

  • Always use sunscreen (SPF 30+).

  • Stay hydrated to keep your skin healthy.

  • Moisturize regularly to keep colors rich & lines crisp.
